Continuing Professional Development

  • What is it?
  • Why do it?
  • Is it compulsory?
  • How does Alphavet's C.P.D. program benefit our clients and their pets?

What is it?

Formerly called Continued Professional Education it is the means by which we keep up to date with current trends, best practice and the latest cutting edge developments in Veterinary surgery and medicine and new veterinary technology.

C.P.D. is defined by the R.C.V.S. as,

"the systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout the Member's working life."

Why do it?

As a practice we have over fifty years of clinical small animal experience between our three veterinary surgeons. This mainstay of our practice is our primary asset only because we frequently read relevant Veterinary Journals, attend courses at both Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities, attend local British Veterinary Association C.P.D. meetings and above all want to continue to learn!

Is it compulsory?

The R.C.V.S. introduced a scheme of self-recording of C.P.D. in 1997 and expects veterinary surgeons to undertake an average of 35 hours per annum over a 3 year period as defined above, to ensure the maintenance of the highest professional standards in line with the promise each made on admission to membership, namely:

"I promise above all that I will pursue the work of my profession with uprightness of conduct and that my constant endeavour will be to ensure the welfare of the animals committed to my care."

From 2003 onwards, the R.C.V.S. intends to monitor up to 10% of its membership, on a random basis, for information on C.P.D. uptake.

How does Alphavet's C.P.D. program benefit our clients and their pets?

Our clients can have confidence in our small animal knowledge base, knowing that we regularly attend C.P.D. courses and continually refresh and expand that knowledge base ensuring that their pets are treated with the best and most up to date protocols whether surgical or medical.
