Sabre

We've walked for miles,
Just you and me.
O'er Hills, through trees and to the sea.
We've played, weve fought
We've run, weve walked.
But always home in time for tea.

You came to us,
A poor wee soul.
Abandoned, left, nowhere to go.
A bath, a game,
A home, a name.
At last for you, a place to claim.

The first few months
Were trying times.
You pushed your luck and chanced your paws.
We bawled, we growled,
We tugged, we cowered.
But finally we both cowtowed

You made our home,
Your very own.
What yours' is ours' and ours' your own.
You guard, you eat
You drink, you sleep
And all the time our safety keep.

Within our home,
You made your space.
And where it was, t'was your space made.
The bed, settee,
Back seat or all three.
Where eer you were was the place to be.

You looked to us
For food and drink.
With ears that begged and eyes that hoped.
You hoped, we denied,
You begged, we succumbed.
Your ears and eyes knew very trick.

Where e're we went
You had to come too.
No dogs allowed no people too.
We went and lived
We enjoyed and thrived.
Each place we've been Your spirits alive.

Weve stood by lochs.
You swam, we watched.
You've chosen your sticks and pruned them to fit.
You've found and uprooted,
You've shaped and retrieved.
Each stick a joy and each stick your own

You've played in the snow,
You've walked on the ice.
Each winter brought with it, a fresh paradise.
We dug, You rolled,
You caught, We slid.
Your excitement each year, could no be denied.

The years went by,
We all grew slower.
We all went grey, grew stiffer and older.
We watched, we stood,
You sniffed, we looked,
But all agreed, that life was good

My time has come,
I've reached my limit.
I'm old and sore, I'm tired and weak.
I've chased and climbed
I've played and run
Please let me go quietly, I've had so much fun.

Let me close my eyes
And rest in your arms.
I've lived and been wanted.
I've been naughty and forgiven.
I've begged and been cuddled.
I've been hopefull and loved.

Cuddle me once more 'till I no longer see.

We're together forever
Just you and me.
